Anwar waiting for MCMC findings before apologising to Muhyiddin

PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is willing to apologise to Perikatan Nasional chief Muhyiddin Yassin for alleging the latter defended subsidies for foreigners - but not right now.

Instead, Anwar told Parliament he was still waiting for the MCMC to determine whether the source of information he had cited was false.

Anwar also claimed today that he had three sources of information, of which one has been verified as false.

“I have no problem (to apologise) if it is determined there is no legitimate source, then it was a mistake, and I have no problem (to apologise).

“I have asked the MCMC to investigate whether ‘1,2,3' is true. If it is false, then what was said is not true, but wait for the MCMC findings,” he said.

He was responding to Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) and Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut), who asked whether he would apologise to Muhyiddin.

Last week, Anwar claimed in Parliament that the PN chief had defended giving fuel subsidies to foreigners, saying that they too contribute to the country.

He even chided Rosol then for not being aware of the PN chief’s statement.

Muhyiddin denied this, and Anwar subsequently ordered the MCMC to launch a probe - which focused on a TikTok video.

This led to questions about whether Anwar was duped by a possibly fraudulent TikTok video.

It is not clear what the two other sources of information Anwar claimed to have are.

‘Just be honest’

At a press conference in Parliament, Hamzah later responded that Anwar was setting a bad precedent for the rakyat.

“So does that mean anyone can generate fake news, and then ask for MCMC to investigate it? And only when it has been confirmed as fake news, only they would apologise?” he asked.

“But this is just my opinion (on Anwar’s response). I don’t think that should be the way. This can cause problems nowadays. Because I feel with that sort of response, later he will claim the opposition chief said an apology is enough, can sit and talk it out.

“But what I want is the principle of candour. Please just be honest and upfront, don’t hide things… this is what could possibly lead to problems for us,” he said.
